Foliage Plants: The Silent Artists That Paint Your Home with Green

Foliage Plants: The Silent Artists That Paint Your Home with Green

Do you love the vibe that forests give? The giant greens that are hard to miss. Well, if yes, then this article is good to go. If no, then you are about to fall in love with striking, lush green leaves. In this article, I will also tell you about a budget-friendly plant marketplace where you can buy plants almost every month!

Let’s just love nature again, and that too in a way that they feel cared for and comfortable!

What are Foliage Plants (with examples)?

Foliage plants are the ones that win over the hearts with their striking green or coloured leaves. That means you no longer have to stress about why your plants are not flowering (because they do not!). Some examples of foliage plants are ferns, hostas, coleus, etc. Now, let us dive into this world. But before we get started, here’s a little about my journey with plants and what made me an avid plant shopper among my friends.

Leafy Plants: The Saviour of Home Aesthetics

Whenever any of my colleagues or friends visit home, they compliment me on how I’ve decorated everything (even in a rented flat!). What misses their eyes is the silent saviour sitting in the best visible corners of my home. It all happened when, on a random day, while scrolling through the Pinterest boards, I came across Urvann India. Well, I’ve heard all about plant-selling companies online, but the high prices never set the bar above the local nurseries. Urvann was special due to pocket-friendly plant prices (starting at just Rs 39).

My first order from Urvann consisted of two Boston ferns and two cute ceramic pots. That’s how my plant-loving journey started.

Top Features of Foliage Plants That You’ll Love

If you ask me what made me fall in love with them and choose leafy plants outdoors, then I’ll have nothing in particular to explain other than love for nature. But what I explored next was the benefits as someone living in a green household.

  1. Enhanced Quality of Air: Did I feel the change in the air that I breathe? Yes, of course! The oxygen feels calmer and flows just for you. The change has been noted by the guests who have been at my home. The plants work as air purifiers, working their way to remove the toxins like benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene.
  1. High Aesthetics: My home is simple and plain with walls adorned in just yellow paint and nothing extraordinary, except panels with greens and windows with striking leaves. It looks like a mini jungle in itself, and I recommend you try it all yourself.
  1. Easy to Care for: I follow a simple plant care routine, and even if I miss sometimes, the shine from the leaves doesn’t budge. You need to check up on them in a minimal way – Just enough watering, minimal sun, and occasional appreciation treats (fertilisers).
  1. Contribute to a Calming Temperature: There are advantages in every season. I even think I get some degrees less summer in my home. In the rain, I am under a cosy blanket watching my favourite movie. If you can imagine, I bet you know what I am talking about.
  1. Promotes a peaceful feeling: Coming back from work is often stressful. But as soon as I step in, there’s a calm in my mind that everything will be alright. You’ll say, some people have a nature like that, but mark my words, plants contribute as much!

Examples of Foliage Plants That You Can Consider Buying

  1. Ferns

When I got my first fern plant, I didn’t know anything about them. Thanks to the article I read on Urvann. Ferns are shade-loving plants, and I will call them hardy plants for outdoors. They are originally from the forests, where they are naturally found near streams or shady areas near trees. They are excellent foliage plants and will do well sitting in fibreglass pots or corner areas.

(Urvann is also a great online plants marketplace where you can find a variety of plants and tips to improve your garden. Currently, they supply plants in Delhi and Bangalore, parts of India.)

  1. Hosta

Well, hosta plants are also called plantain lilies. I think that’s because of the structure of their leaves. Hostas are leafy outdoor plants that can also thrive in shady or partially shaded areas. You can hence place them in a corner area in your garden. In my garden, I have placed hostas near the fences. They have a striking foliage and attract attention and compliments.

  1. Coleus

Let me just celebrate the colours brought to my terrace garden with this particular plant. It has striking green, red, and sometimes purplish leaves that do magic in the garden area.

  1. Elephant Ear

Let me show you the scene from my balcony. My small balcony has a chair and a ceramic pot in which an Elephant Ear plant is placed. Some say it’s arrow-shaped leaves, but I personally prefer elephant ear, which makes it unique for me.

  1. Grass Plants

Another thing that gets me every time I see my garden is the grass. Oh dear, the feeling of walking barefoot on the grass is calming and so human. One advantage of grass that people often miss is that it captures dust and other harmful particles before they enter your space. In this list of leafy plants for the garden, grasses like Bermuda grass, perennial ryegrass are excellent options.

  1. Indoor Foliage Plants

Snake Plant

Snake plant is the protector and charm of my mini indoor zen space. What’s striking is its high popularity, so everyone easily remembers its name and adopts it in their home.

Areca Palm

Another beauty that is there to stand right by your door’s entrance is the Areca Palm. It has long, slender leaves and can make a space look more appealing.

Rubber Plant

The rubber plant sits quietly in the corner of my living room, but it somehow manages to steal all the attention. Its broad, glossy leaves feel like a splash of deep green luxury against my neutral walls. I love how low-maintenance it is, just a little light, a bit of water, and it keeps growing strong, almost like it’s silently rooting for me on busy days.

Spider Plant

The spider plant is my little burst of cheer. Sitting by the window, its long, arching leaves reach out like playful green ribbons. What I adore most is how it keeps sending out tiny baby plants — it’s like a proud parent always sharing a piece of itself.

My Final Thoughts

Let’s not underestimate foliage plants. There are lots of qualities that you can really appreciate. I hope this article gives you an insight into all of them. You can now go ahead and choose the foliage plants for your home. Through this article, we also told you about our favourite business that’s making waves online – Urvann. With plants starting from just Rs 39, you can make your home a space to love and cherish!
